Successful 2026 Industrial Tomato Processing Season

2026-09-11

Season overview

Our 2026 industrial tomato processing season started on 17 August and proceeded according to the planned schedule. Instead of the 40,000 tonnes planned for the season, a total of 45,500 tonnes of industrial tomatoes were processed. The volumes committed under the contract-growing agreements were therefore amply fulfilled.

Weather and growing conditions

The growing period was characterised by more extreme weather conditions than average. Following an exceptional heatwave at the end of June, nights that were unusually cool for the season occurred on several occasions, which periodically slowed the ripening dynamics of the crop in the early part of the season. At the same time, there was virtually no significant rainfall over the past three months, with only minor, localised showers. Thanks to the reduced planted area, irrigation capacities proved adequate overall, so securing the water supply did not cause any disruption.

Harvest and processing pace

Due to the less favourable weather periods, ripening and incoming deliveries of raw material started more slowly than expected at the beginning of the season. From 21 August onwards, however, the pace of harvesting and processing gradually accelerated and subsequently progressed evenly, in line with plans.

Quality

Looking at the season as a whole, raw-material quality developed favourably. Alongside above-average yields, tomatoes arrived with a high dry-matter content throughout the entire season (refraction value: 5.4 °Brix on average), which made a significant contribution to the production of high-quality tomato products. Processing ran continuously and on schedule, without any major interruptions.

Optimistic Outlook as the 2026 Industrial Tomato Season Begins

2026-06-15

The start of the 2026 season in Hungary’s industrial tomato-growing regions took place under varied weather conditions. A prolonged dry period was followed in some areas by heavy rainfall within a short time, which then gave way to warmer and drier periods. These weather extremes required increased attention in crop management.
